Grocery Buddies

Grocery Buddies

Connecting donors with individuals and families in need of groceries, supporting food access, and building community.

What We Do

Grocery Buddies began as a simple Facebook post in the Hyde Park/Oakley Moms Group during the government shutdown — one neighbor wanting to buy groceries for families suddenly losing SNAP. From that one post, we grew into a community-led aid network.

A Grocery Buddy buys a round of groceries for a family with SNAP facing a lapse in benefits, evictions, or utility shut-off.

We recommend $50 per person in the household, but that's a suggestion. Buddies can shop and deliver, meet recipients at the store, or donate gift cards.

In four weeks, we had nearly 100 volunteers, served 286 people, and put $14,500 back into the community.

Safety Net

The Safety Net Program provides a one-time $100 grocery assistance for seniors with SNAP, in case of an emergency or lapse in benefits. Gift card donations expand our ability to take agency referrals from social workers who support seniors and foster care.

Emergency Program

Anyone with SNAP can apply if they are experiencing a lapse in benefits, utility shutoff, or eviction. We also get referrals from agencies that support the elderly, disabled, and foster families.
